Procreate is a popular app for creating custom sticker artwork, but the export settings matter. A design can look great on screen and still print blurry if the canvas is too small or the exported file does not have enough pixels for the final sticker size.
Here is a practical guide for preparing and exporting high resolution artwork from Procreate for sticker printing.
Start with the right canvas size
The best time to set up your file is before you start drawing. In Procreate, create a canvas at the final sticker size or larger, with enough resolution for print.
- Open Procreate and tap the + button in the Gallery.
- Create a custom canvas size using the width and height you want your sticker to print.
- Use at least 300 DPI for sharp print quality.
- If you are unsure of the final size, work larger rather than smaller so there are enough pixels to print cleanly.
Check or adjust canvas settings
If you need to check your canvas after creating it, open the Actions menu, tap Canvas, then choose Crop and Resize. From there, open Settings to review or adjust the size and DPI.
Changing DPI after the artwork is finished does not magically add detail. If the canvas pixel dimensions are too small, the artwork may still print soft or pixelated. For best results, start with a large enough canvas from the beginning.
Use the right file format
For most sticker artwork, a high quality PNG, JPEG, PSD, or PDF can work well. PNG is useful when your artwork needs a transparent background. JPEG can work for full-background artwork, but export it at the highest quality available.
If your design has separate layers that may need checking or adjustment, PSD can be helpful.
Export from Procreate
When your artwork is ready:
- Tap the Actions button, shown as the wrench icon.
- Tap Share.
- Choose the file type you want to export, such as PNG, JPEG, PSD, or PDF.
- Save the file or send it to the device you will use when placing your order.
Colour mode and print colour
For print, CMYK is preferred where available because it is closer to how ink is produced. Procreate can also create artwork in RGB, which is common for screen-based design. If you supply RGB artwork, some colours may shift slightly when prepared for print.
Very bright screen colours can look less intense once printed, especially neon-like colours. This is normal because screens use light and stickers use ink. Your digital proof helps you check the layout, size, and general appearance before production.
Quick checklist before uploading
- The artwork is at least 300 DPI at the final print size.
- The canvas is large enough for the sticker size you want.
- Text is readable at the final printed size.
- Important details are not too close to the cut edge.
- The file is exported at full quality.
